Power of Attorney: what it means

What is a Power of Attorney?

It is a written document giving someone else authority to take actions or make decisions on behalf of those who are unable to do so for themselves.
This applies to Intensive Care patients when they are too ill, sedated, confused or unconscious.

Why might I need one?

You might need to make medical, legal or financial decisions on behalf of your family member or friend while they are too unwell to make their own decisions. We have provided two documents and a link to a website which, we hope, will tell you everything you need to know:

  • What is a Power of Attorney? (Scotland, June 2013)
  • Guide to making a Power of Attorney (Scotland, April 2013)
